There are so many distractions in this world that glitter and shine. Good food, friends, Netflix, Amazon, social media…I could spend my life living completely separate from God. Fortunately, God gave me limitations, sickness, frailties. There’s nothing like pain to redirect my gaze. Physical pain is the shot that pierces my thick skin of smugness and pride. Limitations keep me humble, and leaning on the only One who can really offer answers in this broken, messed-up world.

“Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.” Psalm 119:67.

“I had never known,” said Martin Luther’s wife, “what such and such things meant, in such and such psalms, such complaints and workings of spirit; I had never understood the practice of Christian duties, had not God brought me under some affliction.” (Streams in the Desert)
